How Does the Shopify App Detector Work?
The Shopify App Detector scans the public-facing HTML of any Shopify store for telltale patterns left by popular apps. When a Shopify app loads on a storefront, it typically injects scripts, stylesheets, or HTML elements with identifiable signatures - unique script URLs, CSS class names, or JavaScript variables. Our detector checks for 50+ of these known signatures across the page source code.
The tool fetches the store's homepage, verifies it runs on Shopify, then matches the source against our database of app fingerprints. Results appear in seconds with no login or installation required.
What Can You Detect?
The detector identifies apps across these categories:
- Analytics - Google Analytics, Hotjar, Lucky Orange, Triple Whale
- Email Marketing - Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailchimp, Postscript
- Reviews & UGC - Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo, Stamped.io, Okendo
- Pop-ups & Lead Capture - Privy, OptiMonk, Justuno
- Upsell & Cross-sell - ReConvert, Bold Upsell, Vitals, Candy Rack
- Loyalty & Referrals - Smile.io, LoyaltyLion, Yotpo Loyalty
- Support & Chat - Gorgias, Tidio, Zendesk, Intercom
- Page Builders - PageFly, Shogun, GemPages
- Payments - Recharge, Afterpay, Klarna
- Marketing Pixels - Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, Google Ads
- SEO - Smart SEO, JSON-LD for SEO
- Translation - Weglot, Langify
Limitations
No detection tool is perfect. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Admin-only apps - Apps that only operate in the Shopify admin (inventory management, order fulfillment, reporting dashboards) do not leave traces on the storefront and can not be detected.
- Password-protected stores - If a store is behind a password page, the detector can not access its content.
- Headless stores - Stores using a custom headless frontend may load apps differently, making detection less reliable.
- Conditional loading - Some apps only load on specific pages (product pages, cart, checkout). The detector scans the homepage, so apps that only appear elsewhere might be missed.
Why Check What Apps a Store Uses?
Understanding the tech stack behind successful Shopify stores gives you a competitive edge. If a top-performing competitor uses a specific reviews app, email platform, or upsell tool, that is worth knowing. You can reverse-engineer their strategy and decide whether those same tools fit your store.
This is also useful for agencies evaluating client stores, developers researching the app ecosystem, and anyone curious about the tools powering their favorite brands.
